style spotlight: allie lewis - FORD model

Monday, October 31, 2011

Backstage at AKIRA CHICAGO’S fall 2011 fashion show, HALL OF MIRRORS, models sprinted off the runway to change into their second looks. in a blur of zippers, buttons and sky high jeffery campbells, i helped them pull together outfits and prepare for their next walk. as the fog of hairspray lifted in the changing room, i noticed one of the more striking models, ALLIE LEWIS. i was instantly drawn to lewis’ unique features and youthful enthusiasm. this was lewis’ first runway show and although she was nervous, she exuded an underlying confidence and an adorable extroverted personality. it was no surprise people naturally gravitated towards her.
I talked with Lewis about her breakout into the modeling industry, her personal style and her future plans for modeling.
Name: Allie Lewis
Age: 16
Modeling Agency: FORD Models
Dirty Little Fashion: How did you get started in modeling?
Allie Lewis: I always had people telling me i should be a model. I always just said thank you and blew it off. My brother took notice and sent my pictures to Ford. A week later we got a phone call from FORD L.A and they said we want to fly you to L.A tomorrow and they basically signed me on the spot!
DLF: Who have you modeled for?
AL: I have modeled for Akira , Smashbox, Nora del Busto and more.
DLF: What is the most exciting thing about modeling and what is the most challenging?
AL: The most exciting thing is just the rush you get from all of it! It's so much fun! The most challeging is trying to balance modeling and school!
DLF: Who inspires you?
AL: I have a lot of inspirations but i would say my family is my biggest. My friends are very supportive, even when others can be negative.
DLF: What are some of your favorite trends?
AL: My favorite trends are old fashion and vintage designs. I don’t personally dress like it but i wish i had more of it! My personal style is random. I like to wear anything.
DLF: What has been your favorite modeling job thus far in your career?
AL: I wouldn’t say i have a favorite just because none are alike! They are all unique! A lot of crazy things happen during shoots, including the outfits and the places.
DLF: I know you recently just walked in your first runway show for AKIRA, how was that experience?
AL: It was so much fun!! The rush I felt when I stepped out in front of the crowd was amazing. I adore the rush and felt on top of the world.
DLF: You are new in the business. Do you have any advice for any other young models?
AL: I would just say always be ready and don’t be nervous. It really is an amazing experience. Always be yourself.
DLF: How has modeling affected your view of fashion?
AL: My fashion has changed a lot. My taste has changed and some of the things I like now, I would never have liked before modeling. I love Forever21, thrift stores and cute, interesting shoes.
DLF: Where do you want to be, modeling-wise, in 5 years? What are your plans for the future?
AL: You can never plan the future. You must wait to see what happens. My dream is to eventually pose for VOGUE.
it is clear that with her personality, charm and breathtaking looks, lewis is bound to go far in this industry. she is a force to be reckoned with and i can’t wait to follow her throughout the rest of her journey.

fashionisto spotlight - jehad broderick - collegefashionista.com

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

FOLLOWING ARTICLE FROM COLLEGEFASHIONISTA.COM:

Walking through the quad on a normal college day, you might not be able to see past the baggy gym shorts, sandals with socks and fraternity tank tops, but ever so often, a real Fashionisto catches your eye. I spotted this Fashionisto walking to The Student Union. Jehad immediately caught my eye with his adorable jeans, plaid button-up and grey cardigan. Cardigans are taking this springs runway shows by storm, being featured in Corneliani and Bottega Veneta. It looks like this college Fashionisto has traded in his ILLINI hoodie for the latest contemporary trend.
Name: Jehad BroderickMajor: Political Science - Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: Where did you get your outfit today?
Jehad Broderick: I got my cardigan from a thrift store, my button-up from Urban Outfitters, jeans from Kohl's and shoes from Bellmont Army.
CF: Where do you get your stylistic influence?
JB: I really like Matt Smith’s look. He is a British actor.
CF: What is your favorite store for shopping?
JB: I am from Chicago, so my favorite store would have to be my favorite in the city, Bellmont Army.
CF: Do you have any fashion advice for your fellow college guys?
BF: Don’t be afraid to stand out and be different. Wear something you normally wouldn’t wear. I never expected myself to ever wear skinny jeans, but here I am, wearing them to school.
CF: You are a freshman in college, what is the difference between style here and style in the city back home?
JB: In Chicago, ‘dressing up’ and looking well put together is the normal typical clothing. Here, I feel guys don’t care as much about the way they are portrayed. They don’t care, wear sandals and socks with sweatpants to go out with friends. I think people should put more emphasis on their clothing.
CF: What is your favorite clothing to see women in?
JB: I love when girls wear button-up flannels and nose rings.
How To: Men, to repeat Jehad’s easy look, just throw on this plaid button up from PalmerCash and layer it with one of these three cardigans. This plum cardigan from Mary & Paul brings a pop of color most men aren’t brave enough to wear, this striped cardigan from Express is young and interesting and this blocked cardigan from Gap is perfect for a simple occasion. So boys, let’s leave behind the fraternity gear, step it up and actually look like we woke up more than five minutes before class. Take hints from Jehad and pull together any look with a cardigan.

forever21 lace-up suede booties, tank, blazer, necklace / urban outfitters socks / buffalo exchange shorts

today was a beautiful day. woke up early, went on a jog around campus, then took a wonderful walk to class. as the leaves change color, i am inspired to do the same. i wore a blazer, my favorite oxford lace-up heels and pops of colors everywhere. i have always loved the color-blocking trend, but have yet to exactly emulate it myself. the colors in the fall are gorgeous and i can't wait for them to glow even more.

bella mia's boutique trunk show at chi omega house

Saturday, October 22, 2011

last monday, i organized an event for my internship at BELLA MIA’S BOUTIQUE. we hosted a trunk show/sisterhood event featuring bella’s newest edition THE ATTIC (affordable, trendy styles for younger, college aged students). the trunk show took place at my sorority, CHI OMEGA and included:
-BELLA MIA’S ATTIC trunk show (20% off all items!)
-dessert party - sparkling cider and cheesecake bites
-screening of The Devil Wears Prada
i arrived at bella early to transport the clothing racks to the house. it was a great feeling to be able to personally pick the clothes that would be in the trunk show. we soon realized that the van would only sit two; the driver and the clothes. i was stuck in the bed of the truck like a red-neck on the fourth of july. everything in the name of fashion can be justifiable at some point, so there was no shame in my red-neck game.
once we arrived at chi omega, we unloaded the racks into the living room, barely able to set them down before the girls swarmed like a scene from Mean Girls. i wasn’t exactly sure if the event would be successful. i was hesitant and skeptical about attendance, but this was just insane. girls were literally jumping over each other to get to these clothes. it was as if we had hidden a half-naked justin bieber holding a willy wonka golden ticket in the clothing racks. i am strangely okay with this.
the girls were running to the bathroom, kitchen, storage closets or any hidden area they could to try on the clothes. they absolutely loved them! when the first person to purchase something walked up to pay, i may or may not have been freaking out a little inside. then more people began to line up. we had girls trailing into the other room because the line was so long. the event was becoming a success.
overdosing on mini-cheesecake bites, sipping on faux-wine and sitting down to bond over The Devil Wears Prada, was the perfect ending to the fashion filled night.
it was an amazing event and it could not have turned out better. in the end, bella profited over $1,000, we were terrified by Miranda Priestly and to this day, we are still looking for that half-naked justin bieber.
big thanks to anna anderson, melinda engle and kori mcgraw. this event couldn’t have happened without you!

style spotlight - gordana rasic - GOCA Designs - exclusive interview for DLF (PART TWO)

Thursday, October 20, 2011

When striding through campus, Gordana Rasic is a person who immediately catches your eye. Walking with fierce confidence, she holds herself high as well as with mystery and poise. I sat down with Rasic at a local Espresso Royal to chat for an hour in the sunlight. Leaning back in the metal chair, wearing her leather pants and black fedora, Rasic seemed relaxed and content. I was intrigued by her secrecy, a puzzle that needed to be cracked. As her John Lennon inspired sunnies balanced off her nose, we discussed her life, fashion designing and her future plans in the fashion industry.

Name: Gordana Rasic
Label: GOCA Designs
Dirty Little Fashion: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Gordana Rasic: I am normally very quiet and shy. I tend to let fashion and art speak for me. I am very multi-faceted. I am always transforming my appearance because I get easily bored. I am always looking for something new to catch my eye and a new character to embody. I would say I am quite the observer and I would consider myself an artist, not a business woman or student. I like to put some kind of light on obscurity and present it in a main focus.
DLF: What trends are you excited to wear this fall?
GR: I am excited to wear fur. Fur is fantastic. I love the new winter jackets, coats, shoes and boots. Color blocking is another trend that I would love to follow. Balenciaga uses color blocking and it’s brilliant.
DLF: Who is your favorite designer?
GR: Jeremy Scott. He has the capabilities of creating fashion designs without compromising his artistic abilities. He can transform any fashion. His recent fashion line was inspired by a New York City night owl. He incorporated the plastic grocery bags with ‘THANK YOU’ repeating in red print and revamped the wording and constructed an amazing crop top.
DLF: How did you get started in the fashion industry?
GR: Prior to design, I was very involved creatively. I painted, did modern dance, acting and singing, but something was missing. I became really irritated with fashion from retail stores. I felt as though they didn’t embody me or what I stood for. I began to create my own clothes to manifest my internal self to the external. In November 2010, my friend conducted a fashion show and asked me to participate and be considered as a student designer. During this process, I began to see cohesiveness in my designs. My inspirations suddenly became a message. I was able to bring my inspirations into reality and showcase it. It became beautiful.
DLF: What fashion blogs, websites or magazines do you grab inspiration from?
GR: I love The Satorialist, The Blond Salad (she combines high fashion with more wearable, affordable items), Italian Vogue, Elle, V Magazine, American Vogue and I.D. One of my favorite subscriptions is a biannual editorial that showcases lots of small details in fashion design called Jimon.
DLF: What are the highs and lows of fashion design?
GR: The highs of designing would be being able to create your own world. Photoshoots and runways create something from the mind and enhance it into reality. It is an incredible adrenaline rush. One of the lows of fashion design would be acknowledging the fact that the fashion world is a huge business world. Although you want the focus to be on the art, you have to respect the business aspect. You need to obtain a fan base, you need to have clients. It is hard to find the medium between art and business. It is hard to choose between artistic expression and selling.
DLF: What is your proudest accomplishment?
GR: Having made pieces and clients that feel absolutely beautiful in them. I have had clients tell me they have found a new confidence they haven’t been able to find before after wearing one of my pieces. This is the ultimate accomplishment.
DLF: Where would you like to be in five years?
GR: Have my own design house or own a boutique on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. I don’t want it to solely house GOCA designs. I want it to be a house for different artists and a place for self expression at an affordable price. As much as I would love to see my items on the red carpet, keeping my artistic integrity is more important.
DLF: What would you say is your main expertise?
GR: I love to create crop tops. They showcase all the beautiful parts of a woman without the air of desperation.
DLF: Would you want to design for a design house or for your own line? Who would be your dream collaboration?
GR: I would rather design for my own line. If I have no artistic say, I don’t think I would want to be a part of it. A dream collaboration would be with Alexander McQueen. While Sarah Burton does an amazing job running the late designers new line, in McQueen's last collection you could actually see his mind unraveling. You saw a man coming apart and it was beautiful.
DLF: When designing, do you look for inspiration from past decades or do you try to create new designs and silhouettes?
GR: I try to do new designs and create something different. In the design process, I like to keep myself out of the fashion realm. I like to isolate myself. I put on intense music and talk myself through it. I like to envision who I see and what I see being worn.
DLF: Tell us about your latest line and where we can find it?
GR: We are currently in the process of opening an online store, hopefully mid-November. You can find GOCA designs on fan page via facebook, our twitter account and our official site. Anatomy of the Human Soul is my latest line. It redefines the term ‘vital organ’. An organ, important to physical needs, isn't limited just to the physical. There are social and emotional facts that connects to each of our vital organs as well. You need a heart to beat, but you also need a heart to love. You need eyes for sight, but you also need eyes to see the beauty in the world. This collection is also more cohesive and we explored more with hair and makeup.
DLF: I understand you have been nominated for by RAWArtists as Designer of the Year, where can we vote to support you?
GR: RAWartist.org - click HERE to register. Click HERE to watch her RAWartist interview.
DLF: If there was only one material left on the planet, what would you want it to be and what would you make out of it?
GR: I would take white latex and create an out of this world wedding dress. The way the light would shine on it; there are so many ways to play with that.
DLF: Besides your own designs, what is one of your favorite pieces from any designer that has specifically stuck in your mind?
GR: One piece from Jeremy Scott. A long evening gown made of red velour. It was a long evening gown without sleeves and a large V-neck opening. The waist was surrounded with a golden rope with tassle. The best thing is the model had a curtain rod on her shoulder, which you don’t realize at first. He took the idea of a shower curtain, but didn’t rid the rod from it. Very playful.
DLF: Describe your design approach in three words?
GR: seclusion, loss of reality, transformation.
Rasic is an amazing designer and clearly a powerhouse in this industry. It is plain to see that she is going to make it really far and I can’t wait to see where she goes next.

FOLLOWING ARTICLE FROM COLLEGEFASHIONISTA.COM:
In the revolutionary manifestation of rock-and-roll culture in the 1970’s of New York City, punk pollutes the air waves, CBGB never sleeps, Andy Warhol’s Factory is crawling with cocaine addicted artists and leather is the textile of choice. Although Joan Jett of The Runaways practically claims leather as her own, we can see the re-emergence of the trend in recent runway shows. The leather pant popped up in spring 2011 ready to wear shows such as AkrisBalmainHaider Ackermann andHermès. I met with Gordana at a local coffee haven on campus. This fashionista and student fashion designer completely showcased the leather trend as well as the rock-and-let-roll attitude the trousers demand. Gordana was on fire with this trend by pairing her leather pants with a simple black blazer, a loud pop of color, a black fedora and John Lennon inspired sunnies.

Name: Gordana Rasic - Year: Senior
Major: Pre-medicine, with a double major in Molecular and Cellular Biology and  Anthropology, and double minor in Chemistry and LGBT/Queer studies

College Fashionista: What inspired your outfit today?
Gordana Rasic: My hat is Forever 21, blazer is thrift, top is Marshals and my leather pants are Top Shop. Today I wanted to become more incognito, staying in the shadows and building an outfit around my leather pants. I wanted a darker color scheme, so I chose an all black outfit.
CF: What is an essential item in your closet?
GR: My armor ring from soyfashion.com. It is the smallest, most simplistic item I own, but it is an accessory that transforms many of my outfits. Taking something so delicate, such as chiffon and pairing it with the ring to give it a hard industrial edge can completely update a look.
CF: How has fashion designing influenced your own style?
GR: Fashion design allowed me to expand my style. I am now able to straddle the lines between wearable pieces and wearable art. Everything I wear tends to reflect my designing style and cultural influences. Even my makeup scheme conveys what I feel on a certain day. Do I want to be confident, intimidating, hide in the shadows, add a victorian influence or a 1940’s touch to my look? I take every day at a time and live through each time period. l get bored easily and am always looking for a new spark or a character to embody.
CF: What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?
GR: Don’t underestimate competition, but don’t be consumed by idea that there are always people designing. Everyone is capable of designing and there will always be someone designing next to you. Don’t be weary. Ignore the subtle feeling of failure and don’t take it to heart when people don’t have faith in you. You make your own destiny.
How To: To recreate Gordana’s chic-grudge look throw a plain black blazer over this type face grey tank and zip up these patchwork leather trousers from Trip NYC . For a pop of bold color, step out in these bright neon suede stilettos from Asos. To accessorize, wear this fedora with these round-rimmed shades. For a night-owl look, rock this asymmetrical, leather bodice strap dress from House of Fraser with this chunky leather chained bracelet. Leather will always be prominent in contemporary fashion and will forever serve as a reminder of a culture that pushed the boundaries, revolutionized music and taught us to just be cool.

EDITORS NOTE: I sat down with Gordana over coffee last week for about an hour. she is incredibly inspiring and an amazing designer. this post is PART ONE of my interview with her focused for CollegeFashionista. check in tomorrow for PART TWO which is written exclusively for Dirty Little Fashion!

fashionista spotlight - reigan massey - collegefashionista.com

FOLLOWING ARTICLE FROM COLLEGEFASHIONISTA.COM:

When Coco Chanel borrowed a tweed jacket from her romantic partner the Duke of Westminster, she never foresaw the impact it would make on the culture of fashion. Since that moment, Chanel popularized the iconic tweed jacket and made tweed a spotlight staple of the Chanel brand for over 50 years. Chanel shaped the men-inspired-women-worn phenomenon and pushed new designers to incorporate the woven fabric into their lines, see Tory Burch’s fall 2011 tweed jacket . I caught this fashionista walking in the rain outside of her house. Reigan perfectly incorporated this latest tweed trend. By pairing a grey tweed blazer with a rose colored knit and simple black shorts, she radiated sophistication and class. Adding maroon tights and layered socks to her plain black booties kept her look clean while still keeping her warm in the drizzle.
Name: Reigan Massey - Year: Sophomore - Major: Psychology and French

CollegeFashionista: Who are your stylistic influences?

Reigan Massey: It all tends to depend on my mood. When I want to dress more classic, I look towards Kate Middleton. I love the way she dresses when she is casual. Reese Witherspoon is always very classy and sophisticated as well. For a more edgier look, I love to grab inspiration from Nichole Richie.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?
RM: I would say my style is very classic, nothing too crazy. I love to wear solid colors. Stripes and color blocking are two things I love to play into my wardrobe if I can. I wear pearls often and can usually be seen slinging around a large bag. Right now I am rocking the red Longchamp.

CF: You have lived in many different places in your life and traveled throughout the world. How have these different geographical locations shaped your fashion?
RM: I tend to go through phases of style. I used to live in graphic tees, jeans and converse. Now I tend to wear flats, boots, cardigans and plain, nicer shirts. I strive for a more polished look. When I lived in the south, I tended to dress more preppy. When I went to Europe, my style changed to become more european, incorporating greys, blacks, and beiges.

CF: Who are some of your favorite design powerhouses?
RM: Chanel, Stella McCartney, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Tory Burch.

CF: What fall trends are you most excited to rock this fall?
RM: Circle scarves, chunky cardigans and awesome boots.

How To: To model Reigan’s sophisticated get-up, pair this adorable tweet blazer from Boden with these maroon tights from H&M. To wear Reigan’s favorite and fight the rain, rock this striped shirt from the Loft with a pair of jeans and hunter rainboots.

EDITORS NOTE: I must admit, Chanel isn't a designer I usually die for, but this fall, I can't get over their homeless-chic look (my version of a compliment, just take it). Chanel always tend to throw a curve ball and wins me over in the end. Maybe I am just maturing, but more structured looks have to catch my eye. My Fashionista this week, Reigan, is the most adorable person I have ever met. Not only is she my beautiful roommate (don't hate her because she's fashionable), but she always holds herself with a classy, positive attitude. If you look at the designers she listed as her favorites, they fit perfectly for her. She always looks polished and sophisticated so of course she was a perfect pic for this week. And obviously no one can resist that southern accent.
