LIFE AS A FASHION INTERN: DAY TWENTY-ONE (FASHION PR)

Monday, June 18, 2012

Today I was finally assigned an account executive. Each account executive represents a group of different clients, becoming in charge of their events, image and attention in the media. This is where it becomes a little more exciting for me.

Instead of handling a wide variety of clients on a larger based scale, I get to dive right into a few and really become familiar with them. I feel almost an ownership for the clients as if it is SOLEY my responsibility if they are successful or not (which it kind of is). It is pretty exhilarating knowing you are exclusively working with world renowned fashion and accessories designers.

It will be interesting to see the difference between working with only a few clients versus a wide range.

DAILY KNOWLEDGE:
1) NYU GYM HAS A FREE ROCK CLIMBING WALL. I REPEAT, A FREE ROCK CLIMBING WALL. Back in the day, as a cool 'tomboy' child, high-heels never had touched my feet and I was in fact, a member to a rock climbing gym. This makes me happy.

2) Some days you will have a million projects and some days just one that takes all day. They will most likely both be equally as stressful. Be prepared, but stay calm. The long project is just a whole bunch of smaller ones. Get the job done efficiently and quickly.

3) In public relations, each day is different. There are always different events, different clients, different collections and different issues that need to be fixed. This is what makes PR probably one of the most interesting careers. Boredom doesn't exist because fashion is constantly evolving with culture.

4) On the 'slow' days, pick up side projects that have been pushed under the rug. Find small things that will improve the office. With so many projects going on and clients under their wings, no one has time to focus on the small details. The slightest improvement in the office can make a great deal of difference. Taking the initiative to find a minor flaw and fix it yourself shows a great deal of responsibility to your superior.

LIFE AS A FASHION INTERN: DAY TWENTY (FASHION PR)

Friday, June 15, 2012

This morning, I prayed to the Summer Gods and they answered my wish. I dreamt up a Friday of walking outside with the sun still up and the whole day ahead of me, of having a 5:00 dinner and possibly even make it to the dry cleaners before it closes. My dream was to experience this mysterious creature that has been spoken of, yet not heard. This exclusive summer pleasure has never once peeked out of its groundhog hole. Until today.

Today, the most magnificent of days, I experienced what I would like to call "Summer Fridays." This might be hard to comprehend, but the sheer madness of this weekly event turns the office into a buzz of euphoria. Summer Fridays consist of a half day, every Friday throughout the summer. I have yet to experience this. Most Fridays, we have been packing for photo shoots or doing other necessary tasks.

This week, the curse finally broke and I walked out of the office at 3:00. I felt like Cruella Deville when handed a new-born Dalmatian puppy.

DAILY KNOWLEDGE:

1. RUN TOWARDS THE FIRE: As an intern, you need to constantly be prepared to work. Never stand around. Always find something to do, even if it means re-organizing the hanger closet or alphabetizing the Runway Collection books. If you see other interns struggling with something, RUN TOWARDS THE FIRE and help them. Be there to help and get the job completed more efficiently. Always be the helpful person.

2. BE WORTH THE MONEY: As a PR company, we represent top clients and designers in the industry. These clients pay a lot of money for us to get their name out and keep up their brand. It is our responsibility to BE WORTH THE MONEY. Down to every detail, we need to be on point. Make sure everything is perfect and the best it can be.

CFDA AWARDS BACKSTAGE JOURNEY

Thursday, June 14, 2012

One of the most incredibly fulfilling nights of my life happened exactly seven days ago. This was the night that I worked backstage as a Production Assistant for the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards. If you don't know exactly what this is, one could sum it up to "The Oscars of Fashion."

After only being in New York City for two weeks, I end up working at an event that lands me in the same room with all of the people who have influenced me to become a part of this industry. It was incredibly surreal and a magnificent night.

The day started off with a usual "Step-And-Repeat" Red Carpet. (INSIDER'S SECRET: If you have an All Access Pass, a headset and are donning an "I am wearing black because I am important" outfit, you are NOT asked questions) With this newly found confidence via a string lanyard around my neck, I stood my ground right at the very entrance to the Awards. Every single person who attended the Awards had to pass FEET away from me. I am even in the back of some of the red carpet pictures.

There is a feeling of seeing a celebrity, ONE CELEBRITY, that gives you chills, adrenaline and a guaranteed dopey smile on your face. The feeling of seeing one hundred plus celebrities at once is unfathomable. It really is an insane feeling. I just couldn't image being in the same room as some of these people.

During the show, I was in charge of taking speakers or Award winners back to their seat in the audience and making sure people were where they needed to be at the right time. After the entire awards show was completed, I was done for the night. The house doors opened, and I became one of them. I schmoozed in the lobby, walking past Victoria Secret models, actors and famous designers, talking with influential icons in the industry and being personally serenaded by the Princeton Boys A cappella group.

LIST OF THE AMAZING:

1. Stood backstage as Diane Von Furstenberg's very offical and VERY important purse holder. I was so tempted to open it up and see just what exactly a woman of her stature had in her carry-on. Needless to say, the switch off went swimmingly, and she might be the most adorable woman I have met.

2. Walked Matt Bomer to his seat. Unfortunately he is incredibly happily married. To top off the cake, Matt Bomer is incredibly happily married to a man, which DEFINITELY cuts me out of the running. He is a beautiful man.

3. Walked Prabal Gurung to his seat. While we were making our way around the auditorium, the Awards for Womenswear Designer of the Year were announced. Prabal was sitting in the same row as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (who design The Row). As we tip-toed down to the row, the winners of the Award were announced. MK and Ashley clearly had taken the crown, beating out Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs. Prabal and I immediately pressed ourselves against the wall as a spotlight shone right where we had been standing seconds before. The two (incredibly short) twins stepped out of their row, squeezed past us and gave their acceptance speech. I still am wondering if you can see me in the background with my face smashed against the wall.

4. Walked Lilly Collins back to her seat.

5. Watched Anna Wintour give her CFDA speech. She is just one insanely small fireball of a woman. I have never seen a person who seems so shy, yet so powerful at the same time.

6. Met Sophia Bush. She is stunning and incredibly warm and charming.

7. Met Dakota Fanning. She is one of the most normal celebrities I have ever met. She joked around, was relatable and seemed very down to earth.

8. Met Gabe Saporta... and his girlfriend. Again, I am just not having any luck.

9. Met my FAVORITE fashion blogger, The Man Repeller. I died when I saw her. As soon as we got off duty, I bee-lined straight for her. She is impeccable, adorable, outgoing and warm. I can't say more nice things about her.

10. SOMEHOW went to the After Party at The Boom Boom Room on the roof of The Standard. Keeping our ears pricked during the lobby schmooze-fest, we found out where all the 'cool kids' were going. Flashing our passes at the door, we rode the elevator up with Olivier Theyskens (Theyskens Theory) and his super model muse. We already knew this was going to be a good night. (Side note: I REALLY found out it was going to be a good night when I went to the restroom. Each stall has a floor length window that looks out onto the NYC skyline. I guess some people are into that. I must admit, that is one memory I won't forget.)

11. At one point during the after party, I paused to look around the room. I stop to see Marc Jacobs bent down tying his newly polished shoes, Rachel Zoe running around on the dance floor, champaign in hand, Jessica Stam flirting with her latest boy-toy and Kate Bosworth and Lilly Collins caught in a deep conversation. Surreal. There is no other word.

12. Ran into Gabe Saporta for a second time, resulting in a generous greeting and a "I look like I am suave, but I am really dying inside" moment after receiving a bon-a-fied New York City cheek kiss. Maybe there is still hope?

13. Chatted with Busy Phillips (Laurie on Cougar Town) at the refreshment table.

14. When the party dwindled down, I looked around to see that only Jessica Stam and my group remained on the dance floor. Still bitter I didn't challenge her to a "Step Up: CFDA Edition" dance battle. Next time.

To wrap up the night, I have never been a part of something so incredibly
mind-blowing, humbling, exhilarating and inspirational and I hope that I will be able
to work the event in the future. I just have to pack a black dress, not plan to sleep
for three days and be ready for a fantastic adventure.

WEEK RECAP

Monday, June 11, 2012

You can tell how busy I am based on how often I write. This past week I have been non-stop working (some nights as late as 11PM), so apologies for the few and far between posts.

RUNDOWN OF THE PAST WEEK:
SUNDAY: CFDA Preparation Day 12PM-11PM
MONDAY: CFDA Awards Day 8AM-4AM
TUESDAY: Fashion PR Company Event Preparation Day 9AM-7PM
WEDNESDAY: Fashion PR Company Event Night 7AM-11PM
THURSDAY: Fashion Magazine
FRIDAY: Fashion Magazine / MOTHER ARRIVES!
SATURDAY: Craft Fair / Ballet / The Met / Dinner

TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Imagine a downtown loft, hidden away at the top of an apartment building, all white, with hardwood floors, a rooftop balcony with a hot tub and floor length windows that look out onto the New York City skyline. This is where I spent my entire Tuesday and Wednesday. It was one of the swankiest places I have ever seen and I couldn't believe that I was working there. Candles lined the floors and windowsills while models walked around with trays of food. It was an incredibly successful night and it was a great experience.

SATURDAY: Yesterday, my mother, Reigan and I took a little trip to the Upper-West Side for a stroll through the craft market, a tasting of apple-cider donuts and the ballet A Mid Summers Night Dream. The ballet was good, but what really stood out to me was The Met. After the ballet, we walked over to The Met to attend the Prada/Shiaperelli exhibit. It was truly inspiring to see the uncanny likeness the two Italian designers shared, even decades apart. The exhibit, Impossible Conversations was based on the different/similar views the designers would hold if they had the opportunity to have a conversation.

What did you do this week?

UPPER WEST SIDE BRUNCHIN''

Saturday, June 2, 2012

[Forever 21 blazer, jewelry, jacket / Gap blouse / Steve Madden  shoes]

Saturdays definitely seem to be the days in the city that bring me the most joy. Today, Reigan and I met up with our Chi Omega lovers, Kaye and Katherine.

We went for  brunch at a wonderful place in the Upper West Side called The Sunburnt Calf. All of the waiters are from Australia and the buttermilk pancakes are literally to die for. The entire ambiance is very hip and all they played was old 80's music. This definitely is going to be a repeat hot spot for me this summer.

After brunch, we walked off our pancakes around Central Park and found a spectacular view of the city. It really is insane how you can find this gigantic  park in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of New York.

LIFE AS A FASHION INTERN: DAY TEN (FASHION MAGAZINE)

INTERNSHIP: Today was a shoot day. Meaning that we have a photo shoot soon and we need to pick up/ship all of the clothes there by the end of the day. This particular shoot happens to be in Los Angeles with a certain celebrity that I happen to love. Can't give all my secrets away. I honestly do feel like I am in The Devil Wears Prada some times. Today, I ran around the city for hours, going to different designer showrooms and headquarters to pick up thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. From picking up killer Louis Vuitton heels to running across town to grab a Stella McCartney dress, I was always on the run.

Along with packing up all of the trunks for the photo shoot in LA, us fashion department junkies threw a rager in the fashion closet today. My bosses literally are the funniest people in the world. The fashion closet is a blast. We are always listening to oldies or jammin' out to 90's pop band music. We do get our work done, but we also know how to have fun. In the middle of the day today, my boss sent one of the interns out to get a special little treat for the office. This might be one of the more strange requests an intern has received, but this 'little treat' we picked up was the tool used to complete any great American childhood: a hoola-hoop. As soon as the intern got back, the entire department stopped to take a break. We all one by one stepped into the hoola-hoop and took our turn. It was a moment I won't forget. It was so nice to see every one laughing and enjoying their time in the office.

There is a common misconception that people in the fashion industry are rigid and uptight. I have found nothing truthful of this. Everyone I have met thus far works incredibly hard, yet they haven't lost their quirky self. We are all just a bunch of weirdos that dress well and are shoved into a closet filled with incredible fashion designers. It's a hard life, huh?

DAILY KNOWLEDGE:
DUST BAG: The small cotton bag that is shipped with a purse or a pair of shoes in order to keep them clean.

TRUNK: A large trunk used to store all apparel and accessories. These trunks are shipped to the photo shoots that happen outside of New York.

GLOVE PEOPLE: Are insane. That's all.

EAST VILLAGE: Thursday night, Gaby, Reigan and I went to Starbucks for a nice, long night of blogging and gossip. We apparently are way too boring for a blogging party, so fate decided that Starbucks would close at 10 PM, we would be kicked out and that all we would be wearing were workout clothes and laptop bags. Apparently when you are wearing lounge clothes instead of dressing up, that actually makes you stand out MORE. We explored the area, mingled and found a ton of dives that we can go to on the weekend.
