style spotlight: elle fanning

Sunday, July 31, 2011

elle fanning is only thirteen years old yet she already has the style of a sophisticated woman, the enthusiasm of a teenager and the acting chops of a movie star (find her in SUPER 8 this year). from her red-carpet appearances to her spunky street style, she has caught the eyes of the fashion world. not only has she blessed the covers of multiple magazines, she has landed a prestigious modeling campaign with MARC BY MARC JACOBS. the younger sibling to actress dakota fanning, follows in her sisters footsteps in more ways than one. earlier this year dakota was the face of marc jacobs fragrance OH, LOLA. elle looks gorgeous in the campaign, resembling a hint of dakota and to no avail, representing the heart of the brand.

elle is wise beyond her years. she goes for the roles she wants, she dresses her age, but with a sense of adventure and personal style and she oozes confidence. her youth and innocents can be seen in the way she holds herself and she seems to be inspired by classic looks that shape to her body and age group. she is cute-as-a-button with her giant black bow and braided hair and she rocks the 70's floppy hat.  she is definitely a girl to keep your eye on and a huge style icon in the making. dirty DOs and DON'Ts: first day of a fashion internship

Monday, July 25, 2011

your first day of any job can be stressful enough, but adding on looking like you walked out of The Devil Wears Prada intimidates the bravest. here are a few DOs and DON'Ts for the first day of a fashion intern.

DO dress in classics- wear a classic outfit for the first day. scope out the office style ora before you bring your own. you can dress more unique once you know what is acceptable. play it safe and use this clean neutral palate for your first day. a menswear inspired blouse shows you mean business. adding details such as a bow-backed blazer, a wristwatch and feminine accessories shows you have your own personal twist and style without going outside the lines.
DO wear comfortable shoes- as an intern you will be running around all of NYC pulling samples, delivering designer exclusives and grabbing that soy low-fat latte your supervisor wanted. dress appealing, but dress comfortable. opt for a wedge heel in a fun print instead of those sky high stilettos or throw on a pair of suede oxfords when you run out the door. your feet will thank you later.
DO rock a wristwatch- you cannot be late. the internship is the real interview and everything you do makes a difference. since this could potentially be your future job, you must impress everyone. wear a wristwatch so you always know the exact time.
DO bring an over-the-shoulder bag- schlepping around town is grueling enough, but having to worry about your wallet, keys, metro card and phone is not worth it. grab a chic Chanel inspired bag to carry all of your extras while you lug those bags up those stairs.
DO bring a jacket- you never know how cold or hot the office is. wear a cute blazer with a burst of color to keep warm and keep sharp.
DON'T wear anything to short, tight or scandalous- you are coming to work, not to a night club. keep things classy and appropriate. if you want to wear short opt for the pleated, more relaxed, not the daisy dukes.
DON'T wear sandals- we aren't going to the beach. enough said.
DON'T have bed head- interns need to look polished and up-kept at all times. although an interns outfit is important, so is their hair, nails and makeup. put in the extra effort to make sure everything looks clean and professional. use nail polish to add that extra detail to an outfit and play with different hairstyles to spice it up.

these tips are very important. a first impression can change everything. play it safe and use your outfit to stay neutral until you have your feet on the ground. once you have been established, let your style shine.

first day: fashion intern: in twelve months time, i hope to be jetting off to NYC for the ultimate summer fashion internship. let's call this my 'golden goal'. something like this doesn't just land in your lap. it takes fortitude, resilience and motivation. while these dreams might not be coming true for another 365 days, planning ahead never hurt. if you are also looking for a fashion internship next summer try to snag these (under $50!) items throughout the year. once that 'first day' outfit is hanging in your closet, gleaming down at you, there is nothing stopping you from earning your right to wear it. it's what i like to call the new form of 'dirty little motivation'.

new yawk

so many crazy things happened while i was in the city, to even list a few is going to be a feat.

1.  amazing place to people watch. everywhere was a runway. union square was a haven of hipster fashion icons and young, confident trend-setters.
2.  my studio became my second home. spending six hours a day in class; sketching, drawing, learning, draping, finishing and presenting became a normal cycle in my life.
3. the stores. the retail in this city is enough to drive any shopoholic manic. saks fifth avenue, barneys, alice + olivia, free people, made well and the little vintage finds were among my favorite. to touch and visually see great designers work hanging on a rack right in front of you is a great feeling
4.  making friends. i walked into this experience without anyone. now i walk out with strong friendships, a few snapshots of a long beach trip to a friends house and at least one item of clothing that is someone else's.
5.  the independent handbag designer awards. (IHDA) had an amazing time interning and assisting the event photographer.   learning my way around this business one step at a time.
