NEW YORK SUMMER ESSENTIALS

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

From living in New York City for the past three months, I have learned many things. Don't lean against  the metal poles in the middle of a subway train, bring extra cushioning for your rear when attending Monday movies at Bryant Park and definitely DON'T get the $5 caricature in Times Square, unless you want the cartoon version of you to look like the average face of all NYC tourists smashed onto one very large head. While living here, there is one other particular thing I have picked up on: the essentials to every New Yorker's wardrobe.

The Friday Work Grind: neutrals scream class. A white skirt is an incredibly versatile piece that pairs with almost anything. Try to branch our from the 'normal' blouse and go with a little more funk and personal style. Throw in some simple jewelry, some killer heels and a practical bag and you are good to go.

Friday Night Cocktails: While this get-up won't be suited for Downtown Brooklyn parties or hidden New York hole-in-the-walls, this outfit WILL definitely work for the swankier parts of the city. Wear a STATEMENT skirt along with a simple palette. Show just a sliver of your ribs for an added effect. Bring a blazer that can easily be removed for impromptu dance-offs.

Saturday Shopping: Go with plain silhouettes. Wear something that you don't need to unzip or unbutton EVERY time you want to try something on. Go with simple pullover shirts paired with crazy comfortable leggings. Rock sneakers that you know you can walk miles in. Wear separates. There is nothing worse than wearing a dress out shopping and trying on a shirt without pants to reference the fit.

Sunday Brunch Date:  Go for something comfortable. When you go to brunch, there is no telling exactly HOW long you are going to be staying there chatting with your friends. Pair a crazy top with simple shorts, a statement necklace and fun heels.

The "Badass" Uniform'': This isn't something that you plan, but once it falls into your lap, you finally realize what you have created: the 'badass' uniform. Once you get that perfect combination of leather, studs, skulls and badass-ery, then you are unstoppable.

This summer has definitely taught me a thing or two about style. I wonder if I will be able to bring it back with me
